Earth in the Classroom

Inspired by the econcept of global citizenship, this public installation is entitled "Earth in the Classroom." Suspended in the air, white metal pieces form a one-point perspective image, achieving a bas-relief effect through the interconnection of two-dimensonal lines and three-dimensional objects. The hollow visual effect not only serves as an extension of the interior space, but also isintended to transform the closed-in learning environment into a classroom without borders, expressing the hope that the broad vision of university education will resonate with the world community and the natural ecology. The linear bas-relief structure at the center of the classroom forms a three-dimensional earth with the use of LED lights. Shadow outlines of five continents create an effect of the earth's rotation, implying the concern college students should feel for the international community. It also emphasizes that a university should particularly focus on environmental issues to foster a new generation of global citizens. At first glance, this public installation looks like a number of scattered bas-reliefs. However, when the viewer finds a fixed point of view, he or she can notice the one-point perspective effect. It is as if one finds oneself in the perspective of being underneath a classroom. This sudden illusion challenges one's perceptions and points to the question of what is real.
