Did you know that the Formosan Clouded Leopard has disappeared? In April 2013, after tracking the animal for 13 years, research groups from Taiwan and overseas finally confirmed that the Formosan Clouded Leopard is “extinct.” As a result of human neglect or destruction, a rare and valuable part of Taiwanese culture has been lost forever. The fate of the clouded leopard once again reminds us that we are failing to respect the cultural and environmental heritage of this land. Another example of such benign neglect is the history, culture and collective memory of Wanhua District. The “Wanhua District Youth Park Public Art Project” brings together the creative processes of “public art” and “public participation,” “visual and performance art,” to promote the history and culture, community memory and rebirth of Wanhua, thereby embracing the objective of a sustainable planet and homeland. As part of this project, participants from 12 elementary schools in Wanhua District and the local community depicted the memories, life energy and creativity of Wanhua on the body of a Formosan Clouded Leopard.
