“Contemplative Birds” are a loving couple in Greek mythology who spend their mornings under a tree thinking about their plans for the day. A philosophical life of quietism gives them a uniquely artistic orientation. Zhongshan North Road was Taipei City’s first major thoroughfare. It is said that one winter day in the 1920s, people witnessed a pair of “contemplative birds” staring north from the East Gate at the white clouds on top of Datun Mountain. When we treat an artwork as a friend, we can engage with it in a spiritual dialogue and view it as a spiritual guide. Our inner energy will experience a benevolent expansion, allowing us to feel spiritual joy and delight.
